A recent study by the National Telecommunications and Information Association (NTIA) found that American Hispanics have the lowest rate of Internet access in the country. The rate of Internet access among Hispanics is 61 percent, compared with 64% for Black people and 75% for whites and Asians.

Although the gap is closing, the lack of Internet access among Hispanics is a major problem. The Internet is vital to searching for jobs, becoming civically engaged, and conducting many of the economic activities integral for a 21st Century economy. The Internet access gap therefore pushes our economic disparities to a greater extent.

There are two main factors to this gap: language barriers and lack of citizenship. And by providing Internet access and low-barrier grants to impoverished communities of color, including Hispanic neighborhoods, we can fix this problem.

With the work of Economic Empowerment Wisconsin, we can level the playing field for Internet access. To get involved, please sign up on our email list in the bottom right corner of this page.
